From the back cover:
She was elusive. She was today. She was tomorrow. She was the faintest scent of a cactus flower, the flitting shadow of an elf owl. We did not know what to make of her. In our minds we tried to pin her to corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely wen through and away she flew.

A Review for An Important Book:
Stargirl is luminous, bright, shiny, glittery, and sparkly...
Behind the adorable cover, lies words, and pages filled with wisdom. As I was reading Stargirl I felt like I needed to hold the book above my head (somewhat like when Cimba was being introduced to the animal community in the Lion King) and shout "This book holds all the answers!"
Stargirl exposed an obvious flaw in modern society, that most people don't think about. It showed how masked, and fake everyone has to act, just so they will be accepted, and it uncovered so many twisted values that the majority of people have (ex. Giving someone a gift and the happiest part of giving is getting credit).

| Stargirl would do this :) |
Here is one of my favorite quotes from Stargirl (about the actual girl, Stargirl)
You'll know her more by your questions than by her answers. Keep looking at her long enough. One day you might see someone you know."
-Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli pg. 35
I urge you to read Stargirl. It is extremely inspiring, short and sweet, yet, it holds, lots of important and eye-opening messages. Trust me, you're not too old for it.

I felt like I needed to hold the book above my head (somewhat like when Cimba was being introduced to the animal community in the Lion King) and shout "This book holds all the answers!" <--love this! You make me want to re-read the book, Erin!

I <3 Stargirl. In my first year as a teacher, I had the opportunity to order books from the book club catalogs and quickly in the year I had earned enough points to buy a class set of a book and someone recommended Stargirl. I had never read it, but I ordered it anyway. I fell in love as soon as I started reading it. And my students (seventh graders) devoured it. I am saddened only by the fact that I only got to teach it once, but I might try to build it in during read aloud time next year. Even my high schoolers could use the messages from her story!
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone is too young to read Stargirl. It's message is very empowering. If my English teacher gave this book to me in class, I would be ecstatic. I'm glad you enjoyed Stargirl!

This book really is amazing. I love it in ways that I can't describe. I still have my battered paperback from when I was in about 5th grade or so.
ReplyDeleteJust finished this book and when looking it up found your post. Such an amazing read!!! I don't think I'll be able to start a new book for a few weeks, I've got to let this one sink it. Cute blog by the way!
